Privacy Policy

1. Who this policy is from

This policy describes how Tutorify ("we", "us") collects, uses, shares, and protects personal information when you use mytutorify.com or any related service. We are the data controller for the information you provide on the platform. If you have any questions, email privacy@mytutorify.com.

2. Information we collect

We only collect what we need to run the platform safely and to deliver tutoring sessions. Specifically:

  • Account information: name, email, password (hashed), role (student / parent / tutor), and email verification status.
  • Profile information: bio, profile picture, subjects, availability, location (city, state, country), phone number, and intro video for tutors.
  • Tutor verification data: national identity number, qualifications, certificates, and bank account details (bank name, account number) for payouts. This data is treated as restricted and is only accessible to the tutor themselves and to authorised admins.
  • Parent and child accounts: if you create a child account, we store the child's name and learning goals under your supervision. The child does not have an independent log-in.
  • Service requests, bids, contracts, sessions: content you create on the platform — request descriptions, bid messages, session notes, and ratings.
  • Messages: the content of in-platform conversations between students/parents and tutors.
  • Payment data: we do not store full card numbers. Card data is handled by Stripe and Paystack. We retain payment metadata (amounts, currency, status, provider reference, refund history) so we can show statements and resolve disputes.
  • Session video / audio: sessions run on our video provider. Sessions involving minors may be recorded for safeguarding; recordings are accessible to the parent and to authorised admins, and are deleted on the schedule described in section 6.
  • Technical data: IP address, browser fingerprint, device info, and timestamps captured for security, fraud prevention, and basic analytics.

3. How we use your information

  • To create and operate your account.
  • To match students with tutors, run bids and contracts, and schedule sessions.
  • To process payments, hold funds in escrow, calculate tutor earnings, and pay out withdrawals.
  • To send transactional notifications (verification codes, booking confirmations, session reminders, payment receipts, support replies). These cannot be turned off while you have an active account.
  • To send marketing emails or product updates — but only if you explicitly subscribe. You can unsubscribe at any time.
  • To investigate fraud, abuse, or violations of our Terms of Use, including manual review of suspicious accounts and payments.
  • To comply with legal obligations (tax, KYC, lawful requests from authorities).

4. Who we share information with

We share data only with service providers we need to run the platform, and only to the extent each provider needs:

  • Stripe and Paystack — payment processing, refunds, and dispute handling.
  • Zoom — hosting tutoring sessions and, where applicable, recording them.
  • Cloudinary — storage and delivery of profile pictures, intro videos, and uploaded materials.
  • Mailtrap / Mailgun — transactional and marketing email delivery.
  • AWS — hosting infrastructure (compute, database, file storage) located in the United States.
  • Other tutors and students you transact with — they see your name, profile picture, public profile fields, and the messages you send them. They do not see your phone number, address, national ID, or bank details.

We do not sell your personal information. We do not share it with advertisers.

5. International transfers

Our infrastructure is hosted in the United States via Amazon Web Services. By using Tutorify you accept that your data will be transferred to and processed there, subject to the safeguards offered by AWS and our processors.

6. How long we keep your data

  • Account data is kept while your account is active and for up to 6 years after closure to satisfy tax, accounting, and dispute-resolution obligations.
  • Session recordings (where applicable) are retained for 90 days after the session, then deleted.
  • Payment records are retained for at least 7 years to comply with financial regulations.
  • You can request earlier deletion (see section 8) and we will honour it where the law allows.

7. How we protect your data

  • Passwords are hashed with bcrypt — we never store them in plain text.
  • All traffic to and from Tutorify is encrypted with TLS.
  • Sensitive tutor data (national ID, bank details) is only returned by the API to the tutor themselves and to authorised admins. It is never returned in public tutor listings or search results.
  • Access to production systems is restricted to a small operations team and audited.
  • We require multi-factor authentication for admin accounts.

8. Your rights

You can, at any time:

  • Access the personal data we hold on you — most of it is visible in your profile and dashboard.
  • Correct inaccurate data via your profile settings or by emailing privacy@mytutorify.com.
  • Delete your account from settings. Some data (payment records, dispute evidence) may be retained for as long as the law requires.
  • Export a copy of your account data — email privacy@mytutorify.com and we will respond within 30 days.
  • Object to marketing emails by clicking the unsubscribe link in any marketing message.
  • Lodge a complaint with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) if you believe we have mishandled your data.

9. Children

Tutorify is intended for users aged 18 and over. Children under 18 may use the platform only through a parent-managed child account. The parent is the data controller for the child's information vis-à-vis the child and remains responsible for the child's use of the platform. We apply additional safeguards to sessions involving minors, including session recording and stricter conduct monitoring.

10. Cookies and similar technologies

We use a small number of strictly necessary cookies to keep you logged in and to remember your preferences. We do not use third-party advertising cookies. If we add analytics or marketing cookies in future, we will ask for your consent first via a cookie banner.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will email registered users at least 14 days before any material change takes effect. The "Last updated" date at the top shows when this version was published.
